TV installation for a local client in Greenville, SC. Received a call from a guy looking to have a TV installed and 2 audio/video system checked over. Went over to look at the job.
Master Bedroom Install
In the master bedroom, he needed a TV installed with a tilting mount. Also needed the power cable to the TV extended and fished down the wall. The home audio system was working fine for the Direct TV receiver. He was having trouble getting audio from the PlayStation through the speakers even though it was hooked up. The Direct TV, PlayStation and Denon stereo receiver (older model) are located in closet to the left of the TV.
The Direct TV and PlayStation are wired to the TV with HDMI cables. So he’s sending video and sound from both components to the TV. That’s working well. The Direct TV receiver is connected to the Denon receiver using RCA’s to send sound through his speakers.
My client’s problem was with a PlayStation you can’t use the HDMI out and the composite audio/video (RCA’s) out at the same time. Reason he wasn’t getting sound from the PlayStation was because the PlayStation wasn’t sending out audio to the Denon receiver.
Audio Solution
Optical cable and Dolby Digital to analogue converter. The optical cable was around $20 and the converter was $100-sh.
The TV has a digital optical output on back of the TV. What this does is send any audio that is wired to TV out of this optical output.
My way around this problem was to pull a optical cable from the TV location the Denon receiver in the closet. One end of the optical cable plugs into the TV optical output and one end plugs into the digital to analogue converter. Then a RCA is connected to the Direct TV receiver to the converter.
Once connected the system worked perfectly. Client was so happy he purchased a universal remote and had us program it so his system in the bedroom so it would be easy to use.
Family Room Install
My client had a Direct TV receiver go bad. They sent out a technician to install and activate the new box. During the install the Direct TV guy disconnected the existing wires that connected to his home theater system and wired the new receiver to the TV and ran out the door.
Leaving my client later to realize, the TV sound was only working with the TV. Not with the home theater. That’s when he called Grand Central Wiring. We specialize in home audio/video, smart home technology, home security and structured wiring.
Home Theater Solution
Long story short, we came in the same day as the install discussed above and re-wired the entire home theater system. Took out some cables not needed, fixed the Direct TV guys mistake and upgraded some video cables.
We wired all components through the Denon 5.1 home theater receiver. In the end the system was easier to use and better picture quality. All this equals happy customer!
